Passabe was where it all started for us. Until then, it was arguably the hardest thing we’d ever done. The river crossings, the one-mineral-water-bottle showers. Weeks on end in a tent, inside a broken-down house with no windows. That horrible ferry. Funding issues. Censorship. The moral dilemmas – it was the first time we’d come face-to-face with a murderer, the first time we’d really sympathized with one. Over the months, we got to know Alexio’s family, his kids, his parents. We shared a few meals with him, laughed at his jokes. But we never really grasped his motivations. And that perhaps is what continues to haunt us most about Passabe. Why did Alexio confess? We’re still undecided. Perhaps you can tell us.
